Diagnosis for performing IVF treatment

A patient is required to undergo IVF treatment under the following conditions: -

  • Damaged or blocked Fallopian tubes
  • Male infertility due to reduced sperm count or blockage
  • Advanced age of woman can be a primary reason
  • Endometriosis
  • Infertility is one of the most common reasons
  • Other complications related to ovary like uterine fibroids

Procedure followed for IVF treatment

  • The first step is to take fertility medicines for a few months to help ovaries produce several eggs that are mature and ready for fertilization. The monitoring of ovaries is done along with the induction of IVF hormones.
  • Regular ultrasounds or blood tests are done to measure hormone levels and keep track of egg production.
  • Once the ovaries have produced enough mature eggs, the doctor removes the eggs from body (called egg retrieval/ follicular aspiration). This is performed under sedation with no incision in which a thin needle is inserted into the ovary and sacs (follicles) containing the eggs. The needle is connected to a suction device, which pulls the eggs and fluid out of each follicle, one at a time.
  • Then, both the eggs and sperms (collected from the donor and/or the parent) are stored under safe conditions in a special container. Fertilization is carried out in the laboratory by the experts.
  • About 3-5 days after the egg retrieval, 1 or more embryos are put into uterus (this is called embryo transfer).  The doctor slides a thin tube through cervix into the uterus and inserts the embryo directly into uterus through the tube.  Pregnancy happens if any of the embryos attach to the lining of uterus.
  • More than one embryo may be placed into the uterus at the same time, which can lead to twins, triplets, or more.
  • The chances of conceiving a healthy baby depend on many factors like age and the cause of infertility. However, advances in modern medicine have improved the success rates of IVF treatment in India.

Post Procedure

  • Resting is advised for the remaining part of the day after the embryo transfer and one can return to normal activities the next day.
  • Recommended to take pills or get daily shots of a hormone called progesterone for the first 8-10 weeks after the embryo transfer. The hormones make it easier for the embryo to survive in the uterus.
  • Pregnancy test is performed about 2 weeks after the embryo transfer.
