Cirrhosis Treatment Cost in India

About Cirrhosis

  • Cirrhosis is a condition in which the liver does not function properly due to long term damage resulting in replacement of normal liver tissue by scar tissue. Cirrhosis is most commonly caused by alcohol, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
  • Diagnosis of cirrhosis can be suggested by history, physical examination and blood tests, and can be confirmed by liver biopsy.
  • The damage done by cirrhosis to the liver can’t usually be reversed, but an early diagnosis can prevent further damage, treat complications of cirrhosis and detect liver cancer early.

Symptoms of Cirrhosis

Individuals having Cirrhosis don’t have any obvious symptoms during the early stages. However, the most common signs which may occur includes-

  1. Fatigue
  2. Loss of weight and appetite
  3. Yellow discoloration in the skin and eyes (jaundice) due to accumulation of bilirubin in the blood
  4. Spiderlike blood vessels on the skin
  5. Itchy skin.
  6. Easily bleeding or bruising

Because there aren’t any obvious symptoms early on in the condition, cirrhosis is often diagnosed when the patient is being tested for some other condition or disease. However, the following tests may be ordered:

Blood test:

  • To check the presence of any enzymes indicating damage, excess bilirubin and assess creatinine levels (for liver and kidney).
  • To screen for hepatitis infections (mainly B and C), check blood clotting functionality (coagulation), a complete blood count / CBC (including an assessment of associated anaemia), and the measurement of albumin levels (can also be tested in urine), which may be reduced when the liver is damaged.
  • To evaluate abnormal elevations of ALT and AST liver enzymes which may suggest damage and inflammation, possibly elevated levels of iron and the presence of auto-antibodies (anti-smooth muscle antibody, anti-nuclear antibody, and anti-mitochondrial antibody).

Imaging tests: Ultrasound, CT, or MRI scans are used to see whether the liver is enlarged and detect any scarring or nodules.

Biopsy: Tissue extraction for laboratory assessment to determine the extent, cause, and severity of damage to the liver (fibrosis).

Endoscopy: The doctor inserts a long, thin tube with a light and video camera at the end that goes through the esophagus and into the stomach. The doctor looks out for swollen blood vessels called varices that can be a sign of cirrhosis.

Cirrhosis treatment

It may depend on the reason and degree of liver damage and can include the following:

  • Treatment for alcohol dependency: If the Cirrhosis is caused by long-term, regular heavy alcohol consumption, the doctor shall recommend a treatment program.
  • Medications: The patient may be prescribed drugs to control liver cell damage caused by hepatitis B or C.
  •  The doctor may suggest blood tests and ultrasound exams examine for indications of liver disease.
  • To treat the syndrome of Hepatic encephalopathy the patient is prescribed ammonia reduction medication and antibiotics in order to remove toxic substances from the intestine.
  • A liver transplant is a process that involves the removal of the liver that doesn’t function properly and replacing it with a healthy liver from a donor. It is kept as a last resort for the treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cirrhosis

Q. What causes Cirrhosis?

Cirrhosis is caused by many liver diseases due to the abnormal functioning of the organ. The diseases leading to cirrhosis injure and kill liver cells and therefore the repair and inflammation associated with the dying liver cells form scar tissue. The liver cells that do not die multiply and try to replace the cells that have died resulting in clusters of newly-formed liver cells within the scar tissue. Cirrhosis may happen due to multiple reasons including chemicals (such as alcohol, fat, and certain medications), viruses, toxic metals (such as iron and copper that accumulate in the liver as a result of genetic diseases), and autoimmune liver disease in which the body's immune system attacks the liver.

Q. What is the cost of cirrhosis treatment in India?

It highly depends on the case of the patient. Early treatments are not expensive (in the range of $4,000 to $5,000) and are a factor of diagnostic tests, cost of medicines, hospitalization charges. However, Liver transplant cost starts from $20,000.

Q. What are the possible complications due to Liver Cirrhosis?

  • Mental disturbance can occur due to distress.
  • Kidney Failure is rare but possible.
  • Bacterial Infections can occur.
  • Bleeding disorders are also seen.
  • Liver Cancer is extremely rare but possible.

Q. What are the symptoms of Liver Cirrhosis?

Swelling of the abdomen due to fluid retention is the most common sign of liver cirrhosis. Enlarged liver or spleen and yellowing of the eyes or the skin is also seen.

Q. Why is it necessary to detect Cirrhosis in its early stages?

This is because Liver damage due to liver cirrhosis cannot be undone. Therefore, it is very important to detect it at an early stage and prevent further damage to the liver.

Q. What are the side effects of Cirrhosis

  • Bleeding is commonly seen in liver transplant patients.
  • Blood clots are also a side effect of a liver transplant.
  • Failure of a donated liver is rare but can occur.
  • Infection can occur due to unhygienic practices.
  • Rejection of a donated liver is also very rare but possible.

Q. What are precautions to be taken in Cirrhosis

  • Alcohol should be avoided at all costs.
  • Consume a low-sodium diet.
  • Proper sleep and rest is a must.
  • Practice eating a balanced diet.
  • Infections can be avoided by practicing general hygiene.
