Indications

When there is excess fat or skin around the belly button. This may be due to

• Significant changes in weight

• Pregnancy

• Aging

• C – section delivery

Types of Abdominoplasty

Complete Abdominoplasty: Two incisions are made, one from hip to hip just above the pubic area and second around the navel, to free it from surrounding skin. The abdominal muscles beneath are tightened with sutures. The dressing is applied to drain any excess fluid. A compression garment is advised post-surgery.

Partial Abdominoplasty: Small incision is made as compared to complete Abdominoplasty. Skin and fat of lower abdomen are detached and the skin is stretched down, excess skin is removed. Liposuction is often done along with it to contour the transition zone.

Extended Abdominoplasty: The procedure includes complete Abdominoplasty along with lateral thigh lift. In this procedure, contouring is done for the abdomen along with the upper lateral thigh.

Floating Abdominoplasty (FAB technique):  It is a new technique in which tightening and shaping are done through a small incision. The belly button is temporarily detached and excess skin is removed. Muscles are tightened and reshaped from sternum to pubic area.

Circumferential Abdominoplasty: It is a procedure of extended Abdominoplasty along with buttock lift. The procedure is also known as lipectomy/lower body lift.

Combination procedure: Abdominoplasty can be done in combination with liposuction to contour around hips, thighs, and buttocks. The procedure is also known as lipotuck. Abdominoplasty can also be done in combination with breast reduction or breast lift.  Such a procedure is also known as Mommy Makeover.

Procedure

• Medical evaluation of the patient is done.

• Surgery usually lasts for 2-4 hours.

• The procedure can be done under general anesthesia or Local anesthesia depending upon the type of Abdominoplasty.

• The surgeon will make incisions to remove skin and fat. Connective tissue over the abdominal muscle is tightened with permanent sutures.

• After trimming and repositioning, sutures are placed on the incision side and the area is covered with surgical dressing.

• Small drain tubes are placed for 2 days on the incision side for any blood or fluid drain.

• A compression garment is advised for 6 weeks post-surgery.

• The patient may experience bruising, swelling and pain post-surgery. Oral medicines are prescribed for the same.
